Each transition fundamentally changes the pace and the atmosphere, but there seems to be some kind of mysterious internal logic to the flow of the main campaign, too. ![]() There are very few duds overall, in fact, and if the musical line-up is a little more Eurocentric than usual, it also manages to be more harmoniously varied. For the time being, though, I'm a huge fan of Played-A-Live, by Safri Duo - I hate the drums, but I love the giant angry robot who's constantly taking on helicopters - and Traces of the Past, by Makoto Asai, which is like the old Palace Video logo brought to life as a wonderfully creepy Halloween-'em-up filled with leering pumpkins and pointy spires. Standouts? Like your favourite songs on an album (apologies, I'm getting on a bit and I still think in the music industry's equivalent of old money) these tend to change every few hours. Visually, they light up the unit's lavish 5" screen like nothing else - and when it comes to track choices, they're amongst the best the series has seen to date, too. So when you try to work out what's new for Electronic Symphony, Lumines' first appearance on the Vita, the new skins are the most obvious starting point. With a game that puts music and art design right at the heart of the experience, providing a handful of new sights and sounds has meant that Q can release a series of entirely agreeable follow-ups without ever having to risk ruining everything by tampering with the crucial elements of the concept. It gives players something new to think about every few minutes while they stoically sort blocks and arrange colours - and skins have also been a bit of a boon when it comes to sequels. Lumines' ever-changing audiovisual backdrops offer a smart way of keeping things fresh, while also allowing the game's developers the opportunity to alter the pace of the drops and the speed of the sweeping timeline. That's probably where the skins came from. ![]() By the time you're any good at Q Entertainment's stylish puzzler, you're going to be able to play it for hours at a time off the back of a single life. Ask any falling-block fan and they'll tell you that Tetris is a sprint while Lumines is a marathon. ![]() One of the biggest differences, however, is actually structural. The former's purely about spatial sense, for starters, while the latter piles rhythmic elements and colour-matching on top. For two games that are forever being lumped together, there's plenty of mechanical variation separating Tetris and Lumines. ![]() His famous apple tree continues to grow at Woolsthorpe Manor. In 1726, Newton shared the apple anecdote with William Stukeley, who included it in a biography, “Memoirs of Sir Isaac Newton’s Life,” published in 1752. In 1687, Newton first published this principle, which states that every body in the universe is attracted to every other body with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, in his landmark work the “Principia,” which also features his three laws of motion. There’s no evidence to suggest the fruit actually landed on his head, but Newton’s observation caused him to ponder why apples always fall straight to the ground (rather than sideways or upward) and helped inspired him to eventually develop his law of universal gravitation. ![]() It was during this period at Woolsthorpe (Newton returned to Cambridge in 1667) that he was in the orchard there and witnessed an apple drop from a tree. Four years later, following an outbreak of the bubonic plague, the school temporarily closed, forcing Newton to move back to his childhood home, Woolsthorpe Manor. Newton, the son of a farmer, was born in 1642 near Grantham, England, and entered Cambridge University in 1661. In reality, things didn’t go down quite like that. How to growįlower of Kent is unusually late-flowering, so is a useful variety in areas subject to late spring frosts, but make sure you have another late-blooming variety to pollinate it.Īdvice on fruit tree pollination.Legend has it that a young Isaac Newton was sitting under an apple tree when he was bonked on the head by a falling piece of fruit, a 17th-century “aha moment” that prompted him to suddenly come up with his law of gravity. An article on the National Institute of Standards and Technology website gives more insight into the history of attempts to propagate the original Isaac Newton tree in the USA. It is likely this tree was in turn propagated from cuttings sent from the RHS at Wisley in England. It was a scion of the original apple tree grown in the garden of Woolsthorpe Manor, near Grantham in Lincolnshire, which, it is said, inspired Sir Isaac Newton. The trees we supply are propagated from a nursery tree which was raised from a cutting of a Flower of Kent apple tree originally obtained by the USDA Geneva research station. Many cuttings have since been taken from the famous scientist's tree, and it is a popular variety in the grounds of university physics departments around the world. The tree appears to have blown over several times in its life, but each time has re-grown from the roots. As might be expected of a variety from this period, Flower of Kent is a large sharp-tasting cooking apple with juicy crisp flesh, but not particularly flavorsome by modern standards.Įven more remarkably, this apple tree, which must surely be the most important in the history of science, is still alive. ![]() It was subsequently identified as a very old English variety (not surprisingly) called Flower of Kent. The incident is known to have taken place in his garden at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, England - and fortunately there was only one apple tree in the garden. What is perhaps less well-known is that the variety of apple which the famous scientist saw falling from the tree has been positively identified. This lovely story, which was related by Newton himself to several correspondents, occurred in the summer of 1666 - about 350 years ago. Every school student knows Sir Isaac Newton had the inspiration for his theory of gravity when sitting under an apple tree and pondering why apples fall. ![]() ![]() If you notice any product assigned to incorrect region on GG.deals, contact us and we will correct the listing as soon as possible. You should consider these overlap flaps when you’re drawing the outline for the cutout. This will be the base for your pencil holder, so it needs to be snug and sturdy You will get a hexagonal shape, and I caution you to be as precise as possible with the measurements. Grab your pencil and start drawing an outline of the contour using a ruler. Pull out your other sheet of thicker paper as specified in the list of supplies. Hold up, we’re not done yet, but we’re nearly there. This way, you’re less likely to make an error when piecing them together. The decorated side should face outward, of course, so that should help you put the six pieces in order.Īrrange all the six components first before you start sticking them together. But if you’re looking for something bigger to hold all your pencils, go ahead and stick all six parts together. These make wonderful mini-pencil holders as they are. Repeat every step six times till you have six individual pencil holders. This project calls for six such parts, so go ahead and follow the pattern. Once you have tucked it into the fold, one part of your pencil stand is officially complete! Just cut out the accurate shape and size of the diamond-like opening you see and tuck it into the folds to secure it. You can use a scrap of colorful, decorative, or sparkly paper. Here’s when you decide if you want to jazz up your paper pencil holder. The ends of both the folds should meet at the center as seen below. Grab hold of the bottom edge and fold it up by one square width, as seen below. Once you’ve turned it around, ensure that the folds you previously made stay intact. Repeat the same with the right side of the paper until your paper looks something like what you see below. Grab the left side of the sheet and, keeping the half-folds in place, bring it towards the center crease and fold. Gently fold one corner square of the paper inward to form a triangle, as seen below. This time, you will be making half-folds. Your paper should now be a 4×4 box with 16 equal squares. Repeat step 2 until you once again have four equal parts. ![]() Fold the paper in half and press down to form yet another center crease dividing the sheet in half. Turn the sheet around so that the creases are vertical. Once you unfold the paper, you’ll notice that three creases running across the sheet, dividing it into four equal parts. Repeat this fold with the top half of the sheet, folding downward towards that center crease and pressing firmly. Now, what you’ll need to do is fold the bottom half of the paper upward towards that center crease. Unfold the paper, and you’ll notice a crease running across the center of the sheet. Grab your sheet of paper and fold it in half, as shown below. Only, instead of cute animals or pretty flowers, you’re making something you’ll get amazing use out of. ![]() You’re folding and tweaking paper, just like you would with origami. Think of this DIY as a multi-purpose origami project. ![]() I think that's a great way to go, to be perfectly honest. There are several file transfer tools designed to work as viable AirDrop substitutes for Windows. Regardless, I hope he can use your SFTP suggestion. Just wanted to clarify since it matters in this context, at least in my opinion. But, I totally understand if he is unwilling or unable to obtain a new external drive.Īnd he thought "SMB" wasn't Samba (it is). He said he "didn't want an external drive option", which I'm chalking up to misunderstanding of its importance, because, for most people (myself included!), getting started with Linux can include making mistakes, which backups can easily rectify. Therefore, "Cable ISPs = LAN" is particularly untrue in this context. Most ISPs have policies against running "servers" and doing "file sharing" - which is what he's likely referring to. I never suggested making any internet-facing network connections to transfer files. A "LAN" (Local Area Network) connection generally doesn't involve going out to the internet and then back to a/the LAN - unless set up as a VPN / Wide Area Network (WAN), etc. No big deal, but somewhat important to clarify, in my opinion, since it can affect the solution he chooses.įor example, he wrote "Cable ISPs = LAN", which isn't really true. But there were a few other (minor) things. Yes, that was one of the things I was referring to when I wrote that I thought there was "some misunderstanding / miscommunication going on". I don't know if it was something that was theoretically possible, something only an experienced hacker could do, or something my Aunt Tilly could do but I seriously don't think it's an issue any more. ![]() The concern was back in the day that one customer could breach another customers local network. The main communications line connects to a node and from that node can be an entire neighborhood or an entire apartment building. the way cable connects to it's customers. I heard that doing so on a cable ISP is bad If you aren't comfortable with SMB ("SMB" is Samba, by the way), and if you can't/won't get an external drive then I would go with altair4's response and use SFTP. Just format a partition on the external drive as a FAT file system and transfer the files you need from the Mac on that partition, and set up an "ext4" Linux file system on another partition and use that for your Linux backups. I would still recommend this as the best choice, in my opinion, since having backups for your new Linux Mint installation are crucial in case anything gets messed up (it happens, I can attest to this lol). I only suggested using an external drive as an alternative to using the ethernet LAN network / Samba approach. "Turning on file sharing" does not mean that your files will be available over the internet - unless you speciically open those ports on your network router's firewall and a few other things - and I am not suggesting you do this. Okay, there's definitely some misunderstanding / miscommunication going on here. Is any of this making sense to you? Because I think you're jumping to incorrect conclusions about the way these technologies work. ![]() Any network protocol setup (like SMB) is done behind the scenes, you don't have to do any of that. It is simply checking a check box (read the link I provided?). There is no "setting up SMB" if you follow the directions I linked to you to use a Mac and set up file sharing - it is a simple GUI in the Mac OS. Let me ask you again since you didn't answer my question:Īre you on the same network? As in local network? (ie. I'm not talking about sharing across a cable ISP (where did you even get the idea that I suggested that?) Consider a small Western Digital Passport (2TB), they can be found relatively cheap.Īs I said several times. They not super expensive these days, and generally well worth it. As someone already mentioned I would buy an external drive if I were you, for your backups, at least. If this doesn't work, get an external hard drive (do you have USB2 on both machines? USB3 is backwards-compatible to USB2, btw). See the sections on that page titled "Share a Folder on Mac OS X" and "Access a Shared Folder from Linux" (although the network name might be different for you). You don't need third party software to do any of this. Have you tried simply creating a network share on the Mac and tried connecting to it from your Linux machine? You're on the same network, right? You can then just transfer all the files across the network in Nemo (the main file manager GUI application in Linux Mint). |
